Precious Fools started from a scribble in a notebook, and a strange overwhelming need for a sense of community during this pivotal time in history. We began this journey with the intention of giving creatives a platform to document and utilize art as a creative vessel. From our perspective as two white women living through the Black Lives Matter Movement, like many other deceptively progressive white folks, we have had to evaluate why we are so late to vocally support institutional change. This movement is not new, nor is it acceptable the sheer lack of consideration that we have taken in making efforts in the past towards truly becoming anti-racist. Progressive white people like ourselves, truly have just been living in our own ignorance and bliss. This is because the systems that we live in and contribute to are designed to reinforce white supremacy and oppress marginalized groups within our communities, specifically Black people. We want to take full ownership for our faults and complacency in perpetuating racist ideals and allowing for these systems to continue to thrive out of our own comfort and narcissism. Precious Fools is a place for young creatives like us to contribute to the re-education of white folks, because the fact of the matter is; It. Is. Not. Black. People’s. Responsibility. To. Educate. White. People.
Not only did we create Precious Fools to provide re-education resources for our fellow white people who are struggling with understanding this humanitarian movement, but more importantly to create a platform to broadcast the voices of the many silenced young Black creatives among us. Being anti-racist is not passive. Action and authenticity from white people is the only way that the Black Lives Matter Movement does not become a trend.
Creative individuals must realize the ways in which we can each contribute to derailing the racist institutions around us. Whether that is through direct actions, visual art, words, or any other form of self- expression, this is the most important reflection of history. As artists, we have the ability to document and expose history, and look at it through a modern lens. As creatives, it is our responsibility to educate and connect the people around us, and through that we can turn passionate rage into concrete change.
We hope that Precious Fools can be a time capsule that captures the way young creatives continue to navigate the state of emergency that our world is struggling with. <3
We first and foremost want to provide a place for creatives to share their process and gain a sense of community through vulnerability and honesty.
To provide resources and support, as well as trying to re-educate and debunk implicit bias’ ingrained in ignorant and savior-complex-reliant white folks.
As much as change requires coming together and uniting in protest against the oppressive and racist systems that are at large in our country, we are equally committed to nurturing individual awareness. Recognizing our own faults and errors, implementing solutions and apologies, and then carrying that practice onto help other people go through the same journey.
We (Precious Fool’s creators, Alex and Matilda) are both 17! We cannot vote in the next Presidential election, we technically have no voice in a system and government that we are getting handed. Precious Fools is here to help combat that fear.
All of these goals impact the way that artists and creatives make and produce. Precious Fools aims to not only provide resources and information, but also aims to create a digital time capsule of the young creative minds at work during a critical time in our world’s history.
